This wedding at Black Sheep Shelter was near and dear to me. Weddings. The word itself carries so much weight, so much significance. It is a celebration of love, a union of two hearts embarking on another monumental marker in their life together. As a photographer, I have been fortunate enough to witness. Plus, I have captured countless weddings, each one unique and charming in its own way.
There is something truly special about weddings that are crafted with care, dedication, and attention to detail. These are the weddings that stand out the most. They are the ones that leave a lasting impression on me. Vanessa and Dan’s wedding was one such celebration.
With Vanessa’s solid professional background in event planning, the day was seamless and true to them as a couple. I’ve also met my fair share of wedding coordinators. I never fell for one so quickly as I did with Danielle of Futtitinni Events. She is like a best friend with a composed demeanor and cordial soul. One I rarely meet in this industry. Van and Dan had a dream team behind the scene.
In addition, the stellar setting made this Black Sheep Shelter wedding in South Haven, Michigan – an outdoor haven with an open-air literal shelter that perfectly complemented the couple’s playful nature and charming autumn decor. As a lover of outdoor weddings, I couldn’t have asked for a more idyllic location. Capturing the sheer beauty of nature blending seamlessly with their love. The owners provide such a well-tended to piece of land. It is impossible not to immediately fall in love with it.
As fate would have it, however, everything but the weather cooperated.
And yet, amidst all the on and off rain and wind, Van and Dan stood there. Also, undeterred, radiating a love and warmth that laughed right at the face of it all. Truly, they did.
The majority of my work as wedding photographer deals with the elements. I encounter my fair share of unpredictable weather conditions. It is a challenge that comes with the territory and one that I have learned to embrace. After all, it’s out of my control! For me, these unexpected moments offer an opportunity to capture the raw, unfiltered emotions. I do my best to showcase the realness of it all, weather included. Throughout their day though, I didn’t feel the weather one bit. What we saw is a couple that has been together for almost two decades. I captured that essence.
Sharing these images with the vendors, they couldn’t believe their eyes that hardly a trace of the weather we experienced showed.
Candid wedding photography is my method to immortalize the unfolding of the day, to frame those fleeting moments that are often forgotten amidst the flurry. I think I did Van and Dan’s justice. And just for some added laughs, they were introduced to their reception by a cacophony of flarp noise putty. That pretty much says it all about their buoyant personalities.
