Concerts at Thalia Hall are some of my favorite to attend. Now add Iron & Wine into the mix, and you know it’s going to be a real treat. Watching Sam Beam effortlessly whisk the audience away to another time and place is a joy. Hen’s Teeth is Iron & Wine’s eighth album, and it is just as rich and luscious as the first. Exuding absolute charm, Sam Beam wraps you up, making you listen more closely. From the stage, he easily invites you to ingest the melodies more deeply.
Although “All in Good Time” appears on Light Verse, hearing it live without the duet transformed the song while still striking a resonant chord within me. Growing up on Chicago’s Northwest Side, I always watched movies in the bordering suburbs. After the show, I revisited that album while I edited and discovered that the music video was filmed at The Pickwick Theatre in Park Ridge. I practically grew up at that movie theater. It felt oddly personal; all of their songs usually do. This is how Sam Beam always brings me back in for more.
